Brighton-Le-Sands, Sydney

Brighton-Le-Sands is a beachside suburb in Sydney’s St George area. It is bordered by Rockdale, Kyeemagh and Monterey. Its eastern border is Lady Robinson Beach, which looks out across Botany Bay to Sydney Airport. The Grand Parade, on the Brighton-Le-Sands foreshore, is home to many restaurants, including many Greek restaurants and cafes. Brighton-Le-Sands has a significant Greek population, with at least 13% having Greek ancestry, and during the Euro 2004 football cup, which was won by Greece, was the scene of much celebration by the Brighton-Le-Sands Greek community.

Brighton-Le-Sands was originally settled by Europeans in the middle of the 19th century, but development really took off when Thomas Saywell constructed a tramline to the area from Rockdale, with the aim of turning the area into a seaside resort not unlike Brighton in England. This proved to be very popular, especially once Rockdale was linked to Canterbury and Tempe.
