Lavender Bay is a suburb on the immediate western side of the Harbour Bridge, in Sydney’s north. It is bordered by Milsons Point, McMahons Point, and North Sydney. Lavender Bay is an affluent suburb with spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, the Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House. With a population of only around 850 people this stunning suburb has almost more parks and views than people.
Lavender Bay is named after George Lavender, the Boatswain of the Phoenix, a prison hulk ship that was moored in Lavender Bay during the 1800s.
Famous residents of the suburb have included Sir Don Bradman and Norman Lindsay, both of whom lived in Bay View Street on Lavender Bay itself. While living on Bay View Street, Sir Don was one of the first Sydney residents to get a private telephone number.
For seven weeks in 1915, Lavender Bay had a train station – however, passengers found Milsons Point station more convenient and only a short walk so refused to use the Lavender Bay Station. The Lavender Bay Station is now railway storage sidings.
