Mosman, Sydney

Mosman is an established and affluent residential suburb in the north of Sydney. Its only immediate neighbouring suburb is Cremorne, as Mosman takes up the end of its peninsula by itself. It is also the only suburb in the Municipality of Mosman, although there are localities within it such as The Spit and Balmoral.

Mosman was originally inhabited by the Borogegal tribe, whose chief Bungaree was influential and popular in colonial Sydney.

The first settler inhabitants of Mosman were Archibald Mosman and his brother George, who took up their land grant in 1821 and used it to build a whaling station. In the 1920s, Mosman was popular among local artists, including Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts; it was known as Sydney’s most painted suburb. During World War Two, Mosman held one end of the anti-submarine boom net, in which a Japanese midget submarine entangled itself on 31 May 1942.

Mosman is the location of Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Taronga Zoo opened as early as 1916 and has continued to run since then. Located in this prime location, it looks out over the harbour and tourists and families alike are able to catch a ferry there from Circular Quay or Bus services.
