Phillip Bay lies on Botany Bay, between La Perouse, Malabar, Matraville and Port Botany. Phillip Bay is one of the smallest suburbs in the City of Randwick in geographical size and population.

Like La Perouse, Phillip Bay is a small suburb with a high indigenous population due to the indigenous history and heritage in the area. In the 2011 census, Phillip Bay’s population was 635 with over 10% of the population of Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander descent. Phillip Bay was home to a reserve from 1883 under the rules of the Aborigines Protection Act. Today the Aboriginal reserve and mission in Phillip Bay, as well as Yarra Bay House, are owned by the Aboriginal people of the area.

During the Depression, Phillip Bay was host to several unemployed people’s camps and many unemployed people made makeshift houses in the area. These were called ‘Hill 60’, ‘Happy Valley’ and located in the north of Phillip Bay and ‘Frog Hollow’ to the South.

Phillip Bay was named after Arthur Phillip, the Captain in charge of the First Fleet. It was named such as it was the first place they landed on the shores of New South Wales.

Phillip Bay does not technically have any schools in the area except the La Perouse Public School which despite its name is on the cusp of La Perouse. There are however a multitude of churches in the area both Catholic and Baptist. One of the most notable being the Colebrook Memorial Aboriginal Evangelical Church on Adina Avenue.

Phillip Bay like most of the Eastern Suburbs is serviced by Sydney Buses. The most frequent services running along the arterial roads of Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road.
