Russell Lea, Sydney

A small, water-front suburb of Sydney’s inner west, Russell Lea is nestled between Iron Cove, Wareemba, Five Dock, Drummoyne and Rodd Point. It has a population of approximately five thousand people. Although primarily residential, the area retains an Italian cultural atmosphere due to its many migrants of Italian descent.

Russell Lea residents enjoy both beautiful water-front views and an easy commute to Sydney’s central business district, which is only eight kilometres away. Residents of the suburb have access to several bus routes, making Russell Lea comfortably connected to the rest of the city. The close proximity of Drummoyne’s commercial district lets residents enjoy the abundance of restaurants and shops found there, including Birkenhead Point shopping centre.

The suburb is named after Russell Barton’s estate, Russell Lea. Until 1932, when the Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened, Russell Lea was the only thoroughfare between the suburbs south of the Parramatta River and Port Jackson.
