Watsons Bay, Sydney

Watsons Bay is the suburb at the very tip of South Head, bordered only by Vaucluse to its south and HMS Watson naval base at South Head. It is serviced by ferry connections to the city and bus connections to Bondi Junction. Watsons Bay is a primarily residential suburb of around 918 people, and its residents leave the suburb to shop, work, and attend school.

Watsons Bay is a small suburb with a large number of heritage buildings, including the Hornsby Lighthouse and Our Lady Star of the Sea Church on Old South Head Road. Apart from the views from the bay the heritage buildings are one of the key draw cards of the area. They offer a stunning backdrop to the suburb.

Watsons Bay is popular with walkers, tourists and recreational swimmwers. The area contains part of Sydney Harbour National Park and fantastic views over the ocean at the Gap, it also has a few restaurants, cafes and hotels to maintain a healthy flow of people through the area. Watsons Bay hosts some beautiful little beaches and also one of the few legal nude beaches in Sydney; Lady Bay Beach.

During World War Two, an anti-aircraft base was positioned at Nielsen Park in Watsons Bay, as was the winch house for the anti-submarine boom net across the Heads. The anti-submarine net managed to capture one of the Japanese submarines that attempted to get into Sydney Harbour. Unfortunately the submarine could not get free so the crew self detonated the sub and killed themselves and sunk the sub for good.

The original inhabitants of the area are the Cadigal people. They used to call Watsons Bay Kutti and it was primarily a fishing bay for the people of the area.
