Woolloomooloo is famous for its unusual name and the controversy over the origin of the name. It is undoubtable that it stems from an indigenous word from the Cadigal people but academics are unsure of the particular word it refers to as it seems like an amalgamation of a few rather than just one.
It is a harbour-side high-density suburb in inner eastern Sydney, sandwiched between Potts Point, Darlinghurst, and the Sydney CBD. It is home to around 3,716 people according to the census of 2011 and most of these people live in high rise apartment style buildings. There are very few free standing residential homes in the area.
The most notable developement is on Finger Wharf. It is the longest timber-piled structure in the world and is home to Blue hotel and lots of residentual apartments. The Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf, built between 1911 and 1915, was originally used to bring order to port traffic in the Harbour, but has since been repurposed as a dining precinct and apartment complex, housing such restaurants as Manta and China Doll. These restaurants have become a feature for the area and are renowned for amazing service and attention to detail.
Woolloomooloo residents have easy access to everything that Sydney City has to offer as it is only 1.5 kilometres from the Central Sydney business district. It is serviced by bused and is also in close proximity to Kings Cross Station.
Woolloomooloo’s famous residents include the Australian actor Russell Crowe who is known not only for his recent controversies but his work in Gladiator and the soon to be released Les Miserables. Delta Goodrem the Australian singer/song writer and judge/coach on The Voice Australia also lives in Woolloomooloo.
