Gladesville is an older suburb in Sydney’s north. It is probably best known as the location of the Gladesville Bridge, which links the inner west with the north of Sydney.

It was also the home of Banjo Paterson for some time during his youth, whilst attending Sydney Grammar. The house in which he lived, Rockend, has been preserved and is now a restaurant. Banjo Paterson Park on the Parramatta River was also named for him.

Gladesville is also notable for its being the location of the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum, later Gladesville Mental Hospital, in 1838. The hospital’s location is now being redeveloped by NSW Health. Gladesville has a significant restaurant and shopping strip on Victoria Road, including Indian, Thai, Mexican, Austrian and Italian restaurants.

Gladesville is popular with families owing to its proximity to several public and Catholic schools. Gladesville is part of both Ryde City Council and Hunter’s Hill Municipality.
