St Peters is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia and is located approximately 6 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. St Peters was a separate municipality from 1871 up until 1949, but has since been governed by Marrickville Council.
The suburb was named by its association with St Peters Anglican Church, a church which was built in 1838. St Peters Church remains the third oldest Anglican church in Sydney and was, some historians say, the first church in in Australia to be built without the use of convict labour.
St Peters is a diverse area bordering the suburbs of Tempe, Erskineville and Marrickville. The suburb is an eclectic mix of commercial and residential streets, giving each area of the suburb a distinct feel. St Peters incorporates a wide variety of shops and cafes along the Princess highway and King St. The people of St Peters are known for their strong commitment to the community and to political activism. Perhaps the suburb’s most well-known landmark is Sydney Park, which is the site of many community events. The park hosts school carnivals, community picnics, and activist meetings. The park is easily recognisable by the large chimney stacks at its entrance, remnants of the brick factory that used to be located there. St Peters is the home of the Mr Washer head office. It is located not 5 minutes walk down May St from Sydney Park. The original Indigenous inhabitants of the St Peters area are the Cadigal People.
The town hall in Unwins Bridge Road was built in 1927 and now houses the St Peters branch of Marrickville Library; this also acts as a community centre.
St Peters railway station was opened on the 15th October 1884 and the suburb’s first post office opened its doors in early October 1851. The population of St Peters is now estimated to be around 7,000.
